The economic implications extend far beyond SpaceX. Starship's per-kilogram launch cost — estimated at roughly $100, down from $2,720 for the Falcon 9 and $65,000 for the Space Shuttle — is enabling entirely new business models in orbit. Space manufacturing is becoming commercially viable. Varda Space Industries has successfully returned three pharmaceutical manufacturing capsules from orbit, producing crystals in microgravity that cannot be grown on Earth.

NASA's Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the Moon by 2027, has become heavily dependent on Starship as the Human Landing System. The space agency has committed $4.2 billion to SpaceX for Starship lunar development. The competitive landscape is evolving. Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket achieved its first successful orbital launch in 2025 and is building toward 12 launches per year. United Launch Alliance's Vulcan Centaur is operational. Rocket Lab's Neutron is on track for 2027. But none approach Starship's payload capacity or reusability. For the broader space economy — projected by Goldman Sachs to reach $1 trillion by 2040 — Starship represents the enabling infrastructure that makes satellite internet, Earth observation, orbital manufacturing, and eventually asteroid mining economically feasible.
